Stephanie Cote
Multidisciplinary Artist
Stephanie Cote’s practice is a lifelong interrogation of the boundaries between material craft, cinematic narrative, and the subtle mechanics of bioenergy. Her work serves as a bridge between the tangible and the ethereal, charting a course from the physical weight of clay to the invisible frequencies of healing.
The Narrative of Material
Cote’s foundation in the visual arts began with a BFA in ceramic sculpture from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Entering the art world during the height of the “art vs. craft” debate, she championed the medium’s legitimacy through her narrative sculptures in New York City’s burgeoning Soho gallery scene. This early period—marked by two prestigious residencies at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs—was defined by a drive to embed stories within tactile forms.
The Expansion of Dimension
Feeling the constraints of static objects, Cote transitioned to the New School – Parsons in New York, where she began making shorts on the streets of NYC with 16mm film. This pursuit of “expanded storytelling”—integrating motion, music, and time—led her to a move to LA after receiving Directing Fellowship at the American Film Institute. Over the following years, her works spanned:
- Experimental short films and music videos.
- Feature screenplay writing and independent development.
- The creation of Zeezel the Zowie Zoon, an innovative children’s pilot blending live action and animation.
The Shift to Energy
In 2001, Cote relocated to the Republic of Slovenia, a move that catalyzed a profound shift in her creative focus. While documenting the vanguard of bioenergy therapy for the television documentary Think About It, she discovered a new “material” to explore: bioenergy itself.
This transition saw the artist moving away from representational narrative toward the energetic. Over years of global travel, she documented hundreds of healing testimonials, eventually merging her cinematic background with bioenergy therapy.
This culminated in the development of digital applications designed to store and transmit bio-energetic healing information through video—an evolution of her “craft” into the digital and biological realm.
Today
Returning to her roots in the visual arts, Cote is currently synthesizing these disparate threads. Her latest work explores the confluence of her early tactile sensibilities, her cinematic history, and her deep immersion in energy work.
