Janko Matić
My practice aims to misplace or decontextualise ‘common things’ from their accepted, affirmed and conventional context – in an attempt to attribute them a new and unexpected ‘meaning’ (or semantics). I often play with the absurd, balancing between banality and ambiguity, trying to provoke a clear concept. I keep my interventions to a minimum, allowing work to emerge on its own. This approach also affects me as much as the audience, it challenges my own perception and model of the world. And in a strange way, this continuously dismantles my comprehension of what ‘Art’ might be, and what its place is in a contemporary context.
