Mikkel Larris

Mikkel Larris’s artistic practice is rooted in words, language and conceptualisation as fundamental structures for how we understand and organise the world. Through the collection and systematisation of variations in language or form, he explores how meaning arises, shifts and is negotiated within the tension between the individual and the collective. Themes such as categorisation and work appear as recurring focal points, but form part of a broader investigation into the systems and narratives that shape our lives.

His works are primarily realised in drawing and works on paper. They operate in the tension between the visually sensory and the conceptual, where text, titles and structured systems function as both motif and method. Central to his practice is an openness in which meaning is not fixed unambiguously, but arises in the encounter between work and viewer.

Systems are a recurring element in Larris’s work. The work ‘Therapy Index’ presents a catalogue of fictional self-help books, whilst ‘Wordcardboardboxes’ consists of modular letter cubes that invite the audience to form and decode words themselves. These works activate the viewer as a co-creator and highlight the structures of language as both limiting and stimulating.

Alongside his solo practice, Mikkel Larris works with the art collective Qwerty, known for performative installations involving audience participation. Here, his interest in language and systems extends to social and spatial experiments, where participation becomes a integrated part of artwork
